Barefoot College Zanzibar, Founded in 2014, provides educational opportunities for rural women with little access to formal education, knowledge or skills. The world famous Women’s Solar Engineering Program sits at the heart of their Journey towards greater agency.

Barefoot College Zanzibar builds on India’s Barefoot College & B.Barefoot mission and vision, to embed their activities directly with and through the Government of Zanzibar; creating lasting systemic change.

The mature agro-forestry programs, regenerative agriculture programs are protecting biodiversity, one community at a time. Through the award winning ENRICHE women’s Entrepreneurship program, we provide a lucrative capacity-building that inspires sustainable and equitable solutions across East Africa while seeding women entrepreneurs at scale.

Barefoot College Zanzibar places women at the heart of bringing clean light to their communities- creating a place of learning, discovery and transformation for poor rural women living on less than $2.00 a day who have never had access to formal education. Barefoot College Zanzibar is a centre where indigenous wisdom and skills are celebrated and valued and the belief is held that access to light enables all development and is a human right. Barefoot College Zanzibar, just like its founding organisation in India, is committed to catalysing the transformation of poor rural communities so they can sustain and manage their own initiatives into the future. They themselves thus create stronger civil society, offer better educational outcomes to their children and provide sustainable economic independence for women.
